A number of states in the USA have comprehensive consumer privacy laws on already on the books or in progress.
Please be aware that not all states with comprehensive laws provide the same level of protections as others for their residents.

The following 20 states have enacted or will enact comprehensive consumer data protection laws:

  5. Florida (effective 07/01/2024)
  6. Indiana (effective 01/01/2026)
  7. Iowa (effective 01/01/2025)
  8. Kentucky (effective 01/01/2026)
  9. Maryland (effective 10/01/2025)
  10. Minnesota (effective 01/01/2025)
  11. Montana (effective 10/01/2024)
  12. Nebraska (effective 01/01/2025)
  13. New Hampshire (effective 01/01/2025)
  14. New Jersey (effective 01/15/2025)
  15. Oregon (effective 07/01/2024)
  16. Rhode Island (effective 01/01/2026)
  17. Tennessee (effective 07/01/2025)
  18. Texas (effective 07/01/2024)
  19. Utah (effective 12/31/2023)
  20. Virginia (effective 01/01/2023)

The following 6 states have not yet enacted comprehensive privacy laws but have narrower consumer privacy laws in effect:
